Italy Packing Guide

While we were in Italy, the most common questions I got were about what I packed for the trip.  Packing for a long-term trip overseas can be a daunting task for sure, so today I wanted to share my Italy Packing Guide.  Here is what I packed in my suitcase for the trip, as well as what I would recommend you bring if you are headed on a similar trip.  We took our trip in May, so the weather was pretty mild (70’s and 80’s) and enjoyable!  These are the basics, but of course tweak this guide to fit the type of trip you have planned!

Shoes

First up is the thing I got the most questions about: SHOES.  It’s no secret that while you’re overseas you will be sightseeing and walking A TON.  I think we averaged about 8 miles per day, and on the days we were in Rome, we clocked about 11-12 miles a day.  That being said, the majority of the days we were in Italy, I wore sneakers.  Specifically these sneakers.  Because you don’t want to be hauling around a ton of luggage, I only brought one bag and only had room for one pair of sneakers. This pair was ideal because it looked cute with everything from dresses to shorts to jeans.  I can’t recommend them enough!  My feet were never sore and they got so many miles put on them.

Other than the sneakers, I packed a few pairs of sandals because a good chunk of our Italy trip was spent in the beach town of Positano.  These Tory Burch Millers are my favorite flip-flops ever.  I often get asked if they are worth the money, and I can’t answer that with a bigger “YES!”  I personally own them in four different colors.  My favorite pair is the “makeup” shade.

Clothes

As far as clothing goes, when packing for Italy I would stick to basics.  Like I said, I only brought one bag, so utilizing the space was key.  By bringing neutral basics that I could mix and match, I was able to create lots of outfits out of minimal pieces.  I wore the same tank with a pair of shorts that I wore later on under my overalls.  For outerwear, I only brought two pieces: a lightweight cardigan and a denim jacket.  Because it wasn’t cold while we were there, that was plenty and I was able to match them with every outfit I wore!

I loved wearing lightweight dresses on some of the warmer days.  My favorite dress came on the trip with me (of course), and I wore it with the denim jacket and sneakers I mentioned above.  As far as bottoms go, make sure to pack a pair of shorts, a pair of jeans, and a comfy pair of pants for the long flights!  You will be so happy you have them on the 10+ hour plane ride!

Accessories

Just leave all your handbags at home and bring a neutral crossbody with you on your trip!  I carted around a handbag, and never used it once.  Who wants to carry a big bag with you while walking 10 miles?!  Most days I wore this neutral Madewell crossbody bag that is so extremely lightweight and holds just the right amount.  I carried my phone, wallet, and sunglasses and that was it.  The less you carry with you, the better.  Daniel carried our camera if we knew we wanted to get photos of a certain spot we were visiting that day, but for the most part we just took pictures on our iPhones!

As far as other essentials, make sure you pack a power converter and a portable charger!  Those were two things that we definitely couldn’t have been without.  I ordered three converters and two portable chargers before we left and it was the perfect amount.

Hope this Italy Packing Guide really helps if you’re headed on a European adventure anytime soon!  Be sure to let me know if you have any suggestions for what you swear by on your overseas trips!
