I’m so excited to share our most recent project with you guys…our fireplace renovation! We have been slowly renovating parts of our new home since we moved in and the original fireplace was in major need of it! Give me a kitchen, and I can tell you exactly the steps to remodel it, but fireplaces were like a foreign world to me. We renovated the electric fireplace in our first home, but this natural gas fireplace was a huge learning experience! So today, I wanted to share some tips I learned along the way to help you with any future fireplace renovation you may have…no matter how big or small it may be!
We did a full renovation of our natural gas fireplace (minus the chimney). This included replacing the mantle, the surrounding tile, the logs, the grate, the burner, and all the accessories that go with it! Here is a basic breakdown of the things you need to do a complete renovation of a fireplace:
To start, we had a carpenter out to measure for a fireplace surround. You can completely skip this step (and the painting process) by purchasing a pre-made mantle. The Home Depot has so many cute ones, and this one is my favorite! Make sure you do research on building code in your area to make sure you buy one that is far enough from the flame. We put marble herringbone tile around our fireplace box to fill the space between the fireplace and the surround.
After the mantle was installed, it was painted and tiled. We used a herringbone Calacatta Gold marble for our surrounding tile, and I love how it came out. Then came the fun part: accessories! Finding fireplace logs was definitely something that I hadn’t ever done, so I really didn’t know what I wanted. After looking through The Home Depot‘s fireplace logs and accessories, I came across this set that looked natural and super nice! We love them! We added embers to the bottom to create a fuller fire.
As far as other fireplace accessories go, we are looking at adding a screen for when the baby gets a bit older. We bought doors, but it would make me feel more comfortable to add a screen for later on when he is walking and we want to have a fire on. I haven’t gotten any fireplace tools yet, but I am loving this set! And most importantly, if you have a gas fireplace, don’t forget a gas key! I almost completely forgot one 😂 and then we wouldn’t be able to use it for the first time. The Home Depot has absolutely everything you would need to remodel and accessorize a fireplace HERE!
If you don’t have the space or capabilities to put a fireplace with a chimney, but really want to have one, I came across two really cool options! The Home Depot carries a huge selection of electric fireplaces and this one looks almost similar to the one we did but is completely electric. Just plug it in and you’re ready to get cozy! And this more modern option is also fully electric and can be inset into the wall to look like it is built in. I love the linear flame because it totally reminds me of the fireplace in our first home.
Here are some fun before and after’s of our renovation, along with some progress photos we shot along the way!
Thanks to The Home Depot for sponsoring today’s post! As always, all opinions and selections are my own.
