The 7 Wardrobe Basics You Need in Your Closet

Target ‘A New Day’ Tank Top

When it comes to wardrobe basics, the first thing that comes to my mind is a good tank top that you can wear under things or by itself.  I have bought tons of tanks over the years at all different price points, and this one from Target is my favorite!  It comes in a ton of colors (basic colors here and a bunch more here), and they are all $8!!!  While I was pregnant, I wore the maternity version under almost everything, as well as by itself with cardigans over top.  If you are wearing them alone and want the white top be completely solid, I recommend layering two of them!  Other than that, I love sleeping in these as well as layering them under just about anything and everything.

Aerie ‘Real Happy Wireless Lightly Lined Bra’

A comfy, every day bra is a must-have in every woman’s wardrobe, and this bra is hands down the best there is!  Not only is it typically on sale for about $25, but it gives just the right amount of coverage and support while still being lightweight and comfortable.  I’ve worn this bra for about 2 years and recommended it to so many readers and followers, and every single person I know of has loved it!!  It has a clip in the back so that you can easily make it a racerback as well.  It fits true to size and the fabric is so soft and silky that you won’t see it under anything.

Madewell ‘9″ High-Rise Skinny Jeans’

Jeans are another no brainer when it comes to wardrobe basics, but everyone knows how hard it can be to find a good quality, flattering pair!  Jean shopping typically isn’t something that comes easy for most women, but I want to make it easier for YOU!  If you are in the market for a classic pair of skinny jeans, try the Madewell 9″ High-Rise skinny jeans!  Madewell jeans are excellent quality for the price point, and come in a ton of sizes (recently in petite & tall versions, too!).  They are flattering on every woman I know and are super basic with nothing on the pockets.  The 9″ is the perfect rise in my opinion because it sucks you in without being too high.

They come in a ton of different fun washes and distressing options, but here are some of my favorites!

A White V-Neck Cami

The ultimate layering piece.  Whether you’re getting dressed up, or just wearing jeans and a cozy card, a white v-neck cami is a must!!  I pair these with everything from tucked into sequin skirts, to under blazers for work events, to chunky knit cardigans on the weekend.  You seriously will not find a piece that gets more wear in my entire closet (well, maybe jeans 😉).  However, unlike a lot of these wardrobe basics, a white v-neck cami is not something I am loyal to a specific brand on. I’ve found quite a few great ones over the years, but this one from Express is my favorite.  Not only does it go on sale all of the time, but it isn’t too low cut of a v-neck that you can’t wear it to work or something.  Definitely snag one of these if you don’t currently have one in your closet!

And if you’re expecting, I ordered this maternity version because of how often I wear a white v-neck cami and got so much use out of it!

Madewell ‘Kent Cardigan’

A basic cardigan is something I can’t get enough of because my favorite outfit combo is layering them under a white cami (like the ones I talked about above) with jeans and a cute bootie or flat.  This Madewell cardigan is definitely my favorite because of how soft it is and how it lays when you wear it.  It’s warm, without being bulky, and a little bit thicker, while still laying and draping nice and flat.  Honestly best of all worlds!  I personally own this cardigan in 5 different colors/patterns and am constantly seeing new colors I might just need (like this “heather timber” color 😍).  You honestly cannot have too many of these!!!

Nordstrom ‘Liner Socks’

Another classic wardrobe basic that really isn’t that fun to buy, but is so nice when you have it!  I think this is probably the first time I’ve ever talked about socks on my blog over the last three years, but I feel like I need to share these with you!  Finding a comfortable no-show sock that you can wear with everything from tennis shoes to booties can be tough (especially finding one that doesn’t slide down), and these are awesome.  Not only are they my favorite by far, but they come in a 3-pack for $12!  These are pretty much all I own in my sock drawer and I wear them daily!

Spanx ‘Faux Leather Leggings’

Okay, and what would a wardrobe basics blog post be without a mention of my all-time favorite leggings: the Spanx Faux Leather Leggings.  If you’ve been a follower for even just a minute, you know how much I love these!  They are definitely a splurge item, but they are a classic basic you will wear for years to come, and the minute you put them on you’ll realize why they’re a little pricer than other versions.  They suck you in at all the right places and the fabric does not look cheap or shiny.  You can wear these with everything from athleisure to dressed up with a tunic and heels.  They are so versatile, and now they also come in petite and maternity versions!  Sizing tip: if you’re between sizes, size up!

With these 7 wardrobe basics, you really have the pieces you need to create tons of different looks with the wardrobe you currently have!  And while some are total steals (I’m looking at you Target tank and Aerie bra 😉), the ones that are a bit of an investment are totally worth it (Madewell skinny jeans & Spanx faux leather leggings)!
