What to Pack: Swimwear Edition

If you have been following along on Instagram, I’m sure you already know that Daniel and I have spent the past week in Maui!  We have had an absolute blast (despite some weather and rain issues) and it was the perfect getaway after a more-than-crazy month of December.  I’m going to do a post recapping our trip and all our Maui tips and recommendations, since this was our second time there this year and we pretty much have figured out what our favorites on the island are.

But today I thought I would share some insight into what swimwear I brought with me.  I mentioned before that due to the craziness Christmas season (we left on the 26th), I didn’t have much time (or budget 😉) to shop for this trip.  I stuck with my basics, most of which I’ve had for multiple years, and I didn’t feel like I missed out one bit!

But as far as any tropical vacation goes, here are the three swimwear staples I would recommend you have in your suitcase!

1.  A One-Piece

One-Piece Suit (wearing sz 4) | Button-down Shirt | Shorts | Sandals (also here) | Sunglasses

I bought this hot pink one piece last year and it’s come on every single trip with me since.  The color and cut still make it youthful and flattering, but you get the coverage of a one-piece.  I love having this on days when I will be in a larger family setting or the day after a big dinner and dessert 😉.  Wearing a bikini works great when laying out with girlfriends and a magazine, but whenever I’m with family or playing with kids it’s nice to have more coverage.

Finding a one piece that doesn’t make you feel like you borrowed your grandma’s suit can be a fine line, but there are tons of options to chose from this early in the year that definitely are not your grandma’s suit…haha!  This one I’m wearing comes in multiple colors and has a detachable halter strap, I also love the lace cutouts on this one with the cute tie in the back, and this cross-front one is another I own and love (I wore it on our last trip in this post!).

2.  A Bikini (preferably a solid black one 😉)

Bikini Top (runs small, wearing US 6) [c/o] | Bikini Bottoms (runs small, wearing US 6) [c/o] | Shorts | Sandals | Similar Sunglasses

A solid black bikini is my go-to.  I feel like it’s the “little black dress” of bikinis and I own multiple.  This one is one of the new things I brought with me on this trip and I can’t get enough of the back!  How cute is that detailing?!  I typically stray from triangular tops because I think bandeaus look better on my body type, but I couldn’t resist the longline style of this one and the cute matching triple strap bottoms!

I shared on Instagram that I also brought this bandeau one too, and I have to say that if I’m running out and just grab one suit, it’s always this one.  I pair it with this bottom which is a different brand, but I love them together and the blacks match perfectly.  (I’m totally that person that would be so bothered if the blacks were “off” 😂).

Here are some of my favorite bikinis out right now, both black and non-black versions:

3. A Cover-Up

Coverup (wearing size small) [c/o] | Sandals | Sunglasses

Last but not least, and probably most obvious, is a cover-up.  Believe it or not, there have been multiple trips where I have forgotten to pack one and I’ve had to make due with shorts and a top or whatever else I had.  This dress was one of the other new things I brought with me, and I loved it so much the second I saw it because of those flowy arms!

Finding a cover-up that can double as a daytime dress, or even one you can wear out to dinner, is a huge plus!  I love finding multiple uses for things on tropical vacation because it cuts down on the packing significantly!  This dress has a liner already built into it (so it’s not see-through!) which made it perfect to wear out to dinner with sandals one night.

I also bought this tank dress (under $50) while we were there that’s more of a throw-on-and-go kind of dress.  I love the strappy back!  Another way I love to make multiple uses out of an item of clothing is by wearing a button-down shirt as a coverup with shorts (like I did with the pink one piece above).  This is one of my favorite ways to cover up and head to lunch after a morning at the pool or beach!

If you are heading somewhere tropical early this year, there are so many amazing swimwear options to choose from right now!  This is honestly the first time I’ve shopped for swimwear this early in the year, and I can’t believe what a better selection there is than in May when I usually am looking.  Even if you aren’t headed somewhere in the near future, but you have some gift cards left over from Christmas, I would snag your favorites now and hang on to them for Summer!
