Since the month of January is all about resolutions and getting into shape, why not talk about getting your closet into shape, aka purging what you don’t need and spending money on the things you do need! Obviously, I’m not one to talk about a minimalist lifestyle (hello, I’m a fashion blogger), but having clothes in your closet that you can wear multiple ways is always plus. So where do you even start?
Today I’m partnering with Nordstrom to break down my tips for what closet basics are essential to make the most out of your wardrobe. And the best part is that every single clothing item and shoe I am sharing below is under $75! These are all staple pieces that can be mixed and matched so many ways to create a versatile and classic wardrobe…without breaking the bank!
First up, layer your tops. Most of the time, I always layer my shirts or camis under a jacket, cardigan, or sweater. So don’t think you have to layer too much (unless you live in a cold place, then yes please layer!). But layering allows you to create tons of combos out of a minimal amount of items. Dresses are also easy to style because it’s one piece of clothing! Nothing to think about, and you can usually dress them up for work or down with sandals and a denim jacket for a more Summer appropriate look.
Neutrals. They literally go with everything, and each other. And no, that doesn’t mean go buy all black everything. You would be surprised at how many different shades of brown and grey there are! The best thing for this category is neutral cardigans. Almost all the time I pair a colored shirt or cami with a neutral cardigan and jeans. Then dress it up or down depending on your shoes!
Jeans. Did you know you that it’s recommended to wear jeans at least 2-3 times before washing them? I know it sounds super gross, but its actually better for the material. So realistically you only need 2-3 pairs of jeans to get you through the week. I would suggest a black pair, a dark wash pair, and a distressed pair. And then in Summer, you can throw in a white pair for fun to create more outfits as well! Talk about living out of a minimalist closet (again, should be taking my own advice!).
Am I the only one that wears the same five pairs of shoes on rotation? I have my favorites that go with everything and I never stray. This year if you’re looking to minimize your closet and keep the essentials, start with the basics: a white sneaker, a neutral or black flat, cute booties, and a nice pair of pumps or sandals. Honestly you can make pretty much any outfit with those four different pairs!
Thanks to Nordstrom for sponsoring this post! As always, all opinions and selections are my own.
