Fall Capsule Wardrobe

With every season, I take time to clear out my closet and get rid of items I haven’t worn in a long time. This conveniently makes room for some new items for that season too 😉.  I’ve gotten quite a bit of questions lately from girls wanting to simplify their wardrobe and wondering what are some “must haves” for Fall.  So today, I wanted to share what I would include in a Fall Capsule Wardrobe to help you simplify your closet and create tons of cute outfits all season long.

In case the term “capsule wardrobe” is new to you, it’s basically a simplified wardrobe of a minimal number of items that you can mix and match to create tons of outfits.  So that being said, all of these are pretty classic pieces in neutral colors with minimal pattern.  But, adding a few items in with a simple pattern, like stripes, really gives you a lot of variety!

Tops

As far as tops go, the key is having different layers to mix and match.  For base layers, a basic short-sleeved tee (this one is under $20!) in a classic cut and a long sleeve striped tee will allow you to layer underneath other tops and outerwear.  A knit sweater and a flannel can be worn alone or layered and can be mixed and matched with all the bottoms in the capsule wardrobe as well!

As far as outerwear goes, a knit cardigan is a must and probably my most worn item in my closet during the Fall!  Other pieces that you can layer over all the base layers are a trench coat, leather jacket, utility jacket, and wool coat if you’re somewhere cold!!

Bottoms & Dresses

The four essential bottoms to have in your closet this Fall are a pair of ankle jeans (my most worn!), a pair of black denim, faux leather leggings, and joggers!  With these four you can create tons of outfits, both casual and dressed up.  All four pairs will go with any of the tops and outerwear.  I suggest going with one ripped pair of denim, and one non-ripped, whether black or blue!

The one dress I feel is a must-have for Fall is a black midi dress.  I personally bought this one that’s under $50 and it is so comfortable and flattering.  You can layer a scarf over it, as well as any of the outerwear.  You can also tie a flannel around it and wear sneakers for a more laid-back look!

Shoes

Booties are my go-to throughout all of Fall, so they are a definite must-have in your Fall capsule wardrobe.  They go with everything from dresses to jeans and if you pick a neutral pair, they will mix and match with anything in your closet.  This is my current favorite pair!

Sneakers and loafers are the two other types of shoes to have in your closet for Fall.  Whether you want comfy shoes on the weekend or need a flat to wear to work or to dress up a bit, you’re covered with these two! I own these Nike’s and love them! The black and white combo is so cute! I don’t personally own these loafers, but several of my friends do and love them!  I currently have them in my cart and think I may just need to pull the trigger on them.

Accessories

Every girl needs a neutral, high quality tote in her closet, and if you don’t have one this Madewell one is incredible!  It’s made of high-quality real leather and is the perfect size to use as a purse or as a work bag (it can fit a laptop!).

A neutral scarf is the perfect layering piece to change up outfits created with your Fall capsule wardrobe.  I love this one with a geometric pattern because the colors are still neutral and it will go with everything.  And it’s under $30!  A floppy hat is one of my favorite accessories because it let’s you get away with not washing your hair one extra day 😉.  Well that and it instantly makes any outfit look stylish!
