Loose Waves Hair Tutorial

Hello friends!  So excited about today’s post because I am answering one of the top 5 questions I get asked all the time: “How do you curl your hair?”  So today I’m sharing my loose waves tutorial, which is how I curl my hair on an (almost) daily basis.  I’ll walk you through each step, showing up close photos, and then at the bottom of the post is a video where I explain everything I use and the process in a bit more detail so you can see it in “real time.”

First up, I start by prepping my clean hair with product to add texture.  My favorite texturizing product EVER is this Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray.  I spray it all over my hair before I curl so that it is less slippery and the loose waves hold better.  I love this texturizing spray because it adds just the right amount of grit to smooth, fine hair without leaving it feeling dirty, heavy, or like it is coated in product.  This product is a bit pricey, but I promise it’s worth it!  The bottle is really big and lasts me quite a while.

After adding texture to my clean hair, I start curling!  I use this t3 curling iron with a 1.5″ barrel attachment.  I originally bought this curling iron at Nordstrom about two years ago after hearing about it constantly from my friends (if you look close in the photos, you can see how “well loved” mine is 😉).  Up until that point, I had never invested in an expensive curling iron, and wasn’t sure why it would be worth the increased cost.  Boy, was I wrong!  This curling iron truly makes a huge difference!  You absolutely have to give it a try if you are in the market for a new curling iron.  I’ve had it two years, and it still works just as well as the day I bought it!

One thing I love about it is that the base and the barrels are interchangeable.  When I first bought it, I bought the base and 1.25″ curling barrel.  As I got longer extensions, the 1.25″ wasn’t a large enough barrel to give me the loose wave look that I love, so all I had to purchase was the 1.5″ barrel and attach it to the base I already owned.  They also have wand attachments and tapered attachments that clip onto the same barrel!!  This way you can add to your collection over time and really only have to buy one iron.

If you’re on the fence, I highly recommend buying this curling iron from Nordstrom like I did.  I always feel secure purchasing investment items from them because I know that if anything doesn’t live up to my expectations, they will always make it right or take it back!

As far as the curling process goes, I try to keep the process simple and only section my hair by pulling each half to the front.  Then, I start at the top of my head and curl 1″ sections away from my face.  It’s a lot easier to see in the video, but basically I clamp the iron near my root, curl away from my face, release the iron and clamp down the section of hair farther, curling as I go down.

After I get to the end of the section of hair, I pull the curling iron down and then release the clamp.  Then, I grab the ends of the curl and pull down to loosen just a bit.  This pull down motion creates that “loose wave” versus a tighter curl and overall gives you a more relaxed look!  If you are going for an even messier, more-peicey look, don’t curl all the way down and leave the last 1.5″-2″ out of the curling iron.

After I am done curling, I like to add a bit of body to the crown of my head to give extra volume throughout the day.  Recently, I picked up this Living Proof Body Builder spray and have been loving it!  You can twist the nozzle to create “more volume” or “less volume,” which I love because on nights where I want something extra, I can turn it up 😉.

Lastly, I use the original Moroccan Oil treatment that I have been using for YEARS!  You need the tiniest amount (I use about a pea size/half a squirt) and rub it in my hands before rubbing it through my curls.  I also gently rub it on the crown of my head to tame any fly aways.  The oil really helps to define the waves and reduce frizz.  Nordstrom sells it in several sizes, including a mini travel bottle, so you can try it out before investing in a larger size!

Thanks to Nordstrom for sponsoring today’s post!  As always, all opinions and selections are my own.
