What It’s Like to Work for A Blogger

Hi! Lyssa here šŸ‘‹šŸ»Ā Iā€™m so excited to give you a little peak into what I do here at Something Beautiful!Ā  But before we jump into that, I’ll tell you all a little bit about myself! Ā I love running and lifting weights, my five cats (yep, five), and going out to brunch with my boyfriend, Michael, of almost five years. Ā When I’m not working with Daryl-Ann, I teach pilates at a local studio, practiceĀ modern calligraphy and create digital prints for my Etsy shop! Basically, I like to stay busy in ways that challenge me mentally and physically while helping others. Total Enneagram 2w9 šŸ˜‚

“How Did You Find That Job?”

The first question I always get asked when I tell someone what I do is, ā€œHow did you find that job?ā€ And honestly, I think it was just meant to be. I found the listing on Indeed and applied without really thinking I would hear anything back just because I was in a different industry at the time. I wasnā€™t even sure if it was the right job for me! But Iā€™m a big believer in the universe putting you where you need to be when you need to be there, and after meeting with Daryl-Ann and Daniel for the first time I knew I had to take the opportunity if it were presented to me. I would have been crazy not to! I also knew that if they were both willing to teach me what I needed to know to succeed, then they were the kind of people I wanted to work for (and work with). Fast forward to now, I couldnā€™t be happier having a job that has never once has felt like ā€œworkā€.Ā  If youā€™re in at a job that just doesnā€™t allow you to flourish, don’t feel like you’re stuck there because you’re not! Ā Stay positive and do everything you can to create opportunities for yourself. Ā The right one will come along if you pursue it.

A Typical Day at Something Beautiful

The second question I always get asked is ā€œWhat do you do as an assistant for a blogger?ā€

A typical day at Something Beautiful- well honestly no two days are alike!Ā But most mornings, I’ll get started up in loft/office space responding to any emails, submitting drafts for collaborations, and updating our Google calendar while Daryl-Ann gets Rhett fed and ready before coming up to join me. Then weā€™ll catch up on anything outstanding, go over our goals for the day and take care of any urgent tasks. Iā€™m a big list maker, so this is usually when I make my to-do list for the day.

The next part of my morning Iā€™ll start working on pitching, negotiations and contracts for any collaborations we might have. This is one of my favorite parts of what I do. Daryl-Ann has worked so hard to build this brand and has so much integrity behind it, so itā€™s incredibly important to me that I uphold that. We only bring on partners that resonate with Something Beautiful. So any sponsored content youā€™ll ever see is something she really loves and uses!

As we move into the afternoon, Iā€™ll work on back-end website tasks like formatting posts, taking care of SEO, creating graphics or Instagram Story slides, updating Pinterest, linking new products or photos in RewardStyle and LTK. Ā We have Excel spreadsheets to organize our collaborations workflow and keeping those updates, along with financial things like payroll, credit card statements and receipts are other things I’ll work on during the week as well.

Some days, I do all of these things and some days I only a few. If orders are delivered, Iā€™ll unbox everything and hang it. If Daryl-Ann is shooting the next day, Iā€™ll help her pull what she needs, organize everything and steam it. There are also some days where Iā€™ll work from home completely.

Every day is different and that’s something I’ve found out I do really well with. Ā Learning and growing with Something Beautiful has been the biggest blessing I could have ever asked for. It motivates me to bring my best each day, to ask questions and stay curious about this industry. Iā€™m beyond proud to be part Daryl-Annā€™s team and canā€™t believe how lucky I am to work for such good people, because at the end of the day that’s what truly matters! I am honestly filled with so much excitement when I think about the limitless possibilities that lie ahead for us at Something Beautiful and itā€™s all because of you, our friends! I am so grateful for each and every one of you who read her blog, watch her Stories, like her pictures, shop her style or repin her recipes.

I know sometimes people can look at bloggers and get caught up in the idea of what it means as a job; I know I had no idea before! Ā So I hope this was helpful for those of you interested in working with a blogger, or those of you just curious about what we do all day. Ā And no matter what job you’re pursuing, I hope you stay positive and trust that you’ll be where you’re meant to when you’re meant to šŸ’–.

    Hi Lyssa!

Firsts of all, happy 2yr anniversary cancer free! Second of all, thank you. Thank you for inspiring many of us today, to create opportunities for ourselves. I love to hear about anyoneā€™s journey to finding their dream job. And last, what are your tips for finding someone as valuable as you to join ones team?

Hi Susie! Thank you SO much!

That question is probably better suited for Daryl-Ann since she hired me but I think just try to look for genuine characteristics and qualities in your candidates that are important to you. Best of luck!
